Prior to his career at the Bar, Clayton was a member of the New Zealand Police for six years, investigating offences including theft, burglary, fraud, serious assault, sexual violation, robbery and attempted murder. Building on this experience, Clayton is a specialist criminal defence practitioner, with a varied practice in all areas of criminal law,

Clayton provides a strong mix of fearless advocacy, in-depth legal knowledge and thorough preparation. His practice covers a broad spectrum of offences, and frequently involves matters of a serious and sensitive nature including public order offences, arson with intent to endanger life, sexual assault, aggravated burglary, importation and supply of drugs, money laundering, fraud, serious assaults and robbery. He has been involved in a number of multi-handed cases, both as junior alone and being led.
