Prior to leaving the NHS to undertake legal training John was a Consultant Physician and Professor of Gastroenterology in Leicester. Apart from clinical practice, he had research interests in the delivery of equitable care to patients from disadvantaged communities. He continues to hold a licence to practice medicine.
His interest in the law has been long-standing. Early on he undertook an LLM in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice, which introduced him to the intricacies of the law. He became a member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Legal Education and Conduct, which was instrumental in extending rights of advocacy and the introduction of CPD. He is also a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
As a result of these experiences, he decided to undertake formal legal training and completed the GDL and BPTC at Nottingham Trent University.
